Wood apple, is a distinct-looking fruit with a rough and hard greenish-brown or grayish-brown color. They are typically round to oval in shape and pack edible pulp inside the hard shell that you can eat once you break the shell or crack it open. The flesh inside can be ivory to yellow in color when young and as it ages, it may turn orange-brown to dark brown in color. Wood apples are generally unique in taste, they are a mix of sweet & tangy flavors alongside grainy, sticky, and moist in consistency.

Knock on the outer shell and if it cracks or becomes brittle, that's your cue that the fruit is ripe. Keep the ripe wood apple in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life if not consumed right away.
