Description

Dry Barhi dates originate from Basra in Iraq, one of the oldest date-cultivating regions in human history, and are also grown in Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahsa region. Barhi is unique in the date world because it can be enjoyed at two entirely different stages of ripeness. In its fresh yellow stage, it is crispy and crunchy with a butterscotch flavour. In its dried, fully ripened stage, which is what Pluckk's Dry Barhi represents, the same fruit transforms completely.

The crunch gives way to a soft, intensely sweet, and almost syrupy richness with deep caramel and molasses notes and a smooth, melt-in-mouth texture. Dry Barhi dates are small to medium in size with a thin, papery amber-brown skin that wrinkles slightly as the fruit dries, concentrating the natural sweetness into an intensely flavourful fruit. They are among the richest-tasting dates available and are a genuine revelation for anyone trying them for the first time.

How To Enjoy Your Dry Barhi Dates?

Eat 1 to 2 dates on their own as a mid-afternoon indulgence. The intensity of flavour means a small amount is deeply satisfying.

Blend with warm water to make a rich date syrup and drizzle over pancakes, yoghurt, or ice cream.

Shelf Life and Storage

Dry Barhi dates can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for 1 to 2 months. Refrigerating in a sealed container extends shelf life to 4 to 6 months, and they can be frozen for up to 12 months. The thin skin is more delicate than thicker-skinned varieties, so always store in an airtight container to prevent drying out. If dates become harder than preferred, place them in a small bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and leave for 30 minutes to soften naturally. Due to their high sugar content, Dry Barhi dates can be sticky in storage. Store loosely or lightly dust with powdered coconut to prevent clumping.

Health Benefits

Quick, Natural Energy: With one of the highest natural sugar concentrations of commonly available date varieties, Dry Barhi is an efficient source of fast, clean energy. Natural glucose and fructose are absorbed quickly, making them ideal for breaking fasts, pre-workout fuel, or any moment requiring a quick energy boost.

Rich in Antioxidants: Dry Barhi retains meaningful levels of flavonoids and tannins, antioxidant compounds that reduce inflammation, support cellular repair, and protect against oxidative stress. Tannins also have natural antimicrobial properties that support immune defence.

Heart Health: Potassium supports healthy blood pressure regulation. The absence of sodium, cholesterol, and saturated fat keeps the cardiovascular nutritional profile clean and beneficial for regular consumption as part of a balanced diet.

Digestive Support: Dietary fibre supports healthy gut motility, prevents constipation, and contributes to a balanced gut microbiome. The natural sugars in Dry Barhi also act as a gentle prebiotic, providing fuel for beneficial gut bacteria.

The Smart Sweet Swap: Replacing processed sweets and refined sugar with Dry Barhi dates brings the same deep sweetness with added fibre, minerals, and antioxidants. Use as a natural sweetener in cooking, baking, and drinks for a cleaner, more nutritious alternative to sugar.
